Boo (How to Be a Ghost)

Here is a new print now available from the store called “Boo (How to Be a Ghost)”. Paige, my friend who is the model in this piece, recently returned from the West Coast for a visit to New Orleans. We had for months discussed a photo shoot without any concept in mind; we’d allow an idea to reveal itself during the session. We got together in the studio. I placed my camera on a tripod with a manual focus lens and within 30-40 minutes it was over.

Ghost Ascending Tulip Staircase in the Queen’s House in Greenwich, England by Reverend R.W. Hardy in 1966.

I reviewed the photos knowing there was promise but didn’t know what. The meaning revealed itself from the process of working on this piece throughout a span of 3-4 weeks. I was thinking of the discussion of metaphysical and occult things that Paige and I had during the shoot. I thought of my daughter too and the games we like to play as well as a photograph made by Reverend R.W. Hardy in 1966 of a supposed ghost’s eerie ascent of a set of stairs (above image).

An intelligent mist traveled down the stairs of an ancient building in the French Quarter. After reaching the bottom floor, the amorphous shape began to form into the bodily figure of a woman. I smile to myself while viewing this image. It’s her hands covering covering her face, allowing only a peek from her left eye.

It reminds me of a game I play with my daughter in which we cover our faces with our hands, which we flip open while yelling “Boo”. While this is the visage of a ghost in mid-metamorphosis, it’s a fun and light-hearted image. She is meant to be teasing the audience.

I hope you enjoy this piece. I love artwork that has details to discover throughout subsequent viewings. Each print is carefully packaged, signed and dated with the day of printing.
