EJ Bellocq’s Dream
2022
Some of the smartest and most creative individuals met by Carlos Detres have been sex workers such as the two women in this piece. Working with both of these women provided an insight of what it may have been like for EJ Bellocq when he met and then photographed his subjects of the red light district called Storyville in New Orleans.
Many of the faces from Bellocq’s photographs were scratched off, presumably to protect the identity of its subjects. The faces of the contemporary women in “EJ Bellocq’s Dream) have been obscured as well but with clouds of ectoplasm instead of scratches. The ecotplasm elevates the women to a spiritual realm, bridging the decades between their era of New Orleans to its past as memories and ghosts collide.
