The subject is based on a real woman who lost her family to the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1853. Her story is one of 8,000 New Orleanians who tragically succumbed to the horrifying symptoms of Yellow Fever that year. Deaths related to the Saffron Scourge from 1817-1905 are estimated at 41,000.
